Pick up your motorcycle at Kagoshima Airport and begin your adventure through Southern Kyushu.
Your first destination is Kirishima Shrine, said to have been established in the 6th century. This sacred site is deeply connected to Japanese mythology, believed to be the place where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, a central deity, descended to earth. Surrounded by dense forest, the approach and the vermilion shrine buildings create a powerful and unforgettable atmosphere for riders.
Next, visit Kakuida, a center of traditional black vinegar production with over 200 years of history. Here, vinegar is fermented and aged in large ceramic pots placed outdoors—an exceptionally rare method even on a global scale. The region’s warm climate and volcanic soil play a key role in supporting this unique fermentation culture. As you ride on, the iconic Sakurajima volcano comes into view. Still active today, it stands as a powerful symbol of coexistence between nature and daily life. From Yunohira Observatory, you can enjoy one of the closest viewpoints to the crater.
You’ll also encounter the striking art piece “Call of the Soul,” adding an unexpected artistic element to the journey. One of the highlights of the day is the Sakurajima Ferry. Turning off your engine and crossing the bay with your motorcycle while feeling the sea breeze is more than just transportation—it’s a moment that truly makes you feel the essence of travel. Start your morning on the Ibusuki Skyline, a thrilling winding road that quickly climbs in elevation from Kagoshima City. With light traffic, smooth pavement, and a steady rhythm of corners, it offers pure riding enjoyment. On clear days, you’ll be rewarded with expansive views of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima in the distance. Next, head toward the Chiran area. The Chiran Peace Museum commemorates the kamikaze pilots of World War II. While it offers meaningful insights into a significant period of Japan's history, the exhibits can be emotionally heavy, so visiting is entirely optional depending on your interest. Alternatively, we recommend the Chiran Samurai Residence District. Beautifully preserved samurai houses from the Edo period line quiet streets bordered by stone walls and hedges, creating a serene, almost time-travel-like atmosphere. It’s also a highly photogenic spot.
After lunch, begin your ride from the “Golden Torii Gate” at Lake Ikeda and continue onto the route circling Mount Kaimon. Lake Ikeda, the largest caldera lake in Kyushu, is known for its calm waters and mysterious ambiance. The golden torii gate set against the lake and mountain makes for a unique photo opportunity. From there, ride around Mount Kaimon, often called “Satsuma Fuji” for its beautiful conical shape. Keeping this iconic mountain in sight as you ride is a truly unique experience. The combination of stunning coastline and mountain scenery makes this stretch one of the most rewarding segments of the tour.
Arrive in Ibusuki for the night. If you’re interested, try the famous sand bath experience—being buried in naturally heated sand is a unique and relaxing way to recover from a long day’s ride.

On your final day, dive deeper into Kagoshima’s cultural heritage. Begin with a visit to the Satsuma Shuzo Meiji Brewery. Kagoshima is one of Japan's premier shochu-producing regions. Its warm climate is ideal for fermentation, and as a major producer of sweet potatoes, the region has developed a distinctive sweet potato shochu culture. Here, you can learn about traditional production methods and experience a craft deeply rooted in the local way of life. 
After lunch, visit Sengan-en, a daimyo garden built in 1658 by the Shimazu clan. One of its most remarkable features is the use of Sakurajima as “borrowed scenery,” creating a grand, integrated landscape. Every element—from ponds and stones to carefully arranged plants—is meticulously designed, making the garden feel like a living painting. Within the grounds, you’ll also find industrial heritage sites that reflect Japan’s early adoption of Western technology, adding historical depth beyond the beauty of the garden itself.
As you return safely to Kagoshima Airport and hand back your motorcycle, take a moment to reflect on your journey. The roads you rode, the culture you encountered, and the landscapes you experienced will remain as unforgettable memories of this special adventure through Southern Kyushu.
